REPUBLIC, Mich. (WLUC) - A catholic church in Republic is going to be featured on The Travel Channel for their annual pasty sales.
St. Augustine Catholic Church of Republic will appear on bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmern to show off the Upper Michigan delicacy: pasties. Community members from all around Republic came out to help make the pasties. They had to condense a three day process into one hour for filming.
“It was sort of a community -- has been a community effort, so that was really good thing to be recognized for such a good spirit throughout the community,” said Sister Margey Schmelzle of St. Augustine. “Plus the good pasties!”
The episode will be airing on the Travel Channel Tuesday, February 28th 9:00 p.m. EST/ 8:00 p.m. CST. If you can't tune in then, click here for a full schedule of air times.

How To Use Republic Michigan News
Welcome to the opening edition of the Republic Michigan News!
New content will be added through the month to the top of this post. For ease of navigating the news, a truncated post or headline will appear here with a link to the full article.
The tabs across the top of the page will take you to a list of articles from that category with a short description or headline and a link to open the full article, picture, or other feature.
Some information will not appear as news stories, but will be found by clicking the appropriate tab, such as the Business Directory, Employment, Real Estate, etc.
To the right you will find a News Archive, that will open a page like this one. When you follow the Headline Link, the page that opens will have an archive that will show each individual article that will open only that entry. Both this page and the archive page (where the actual articles are stored) are searchable via the search function located at the top right side of the page.
Links on these pages may open, for example on the Business Directory or Events pages, the business webpage, advertisements or event art, photos, etc. allowing the main page to provide basic information and remain uncluttered and easy to use.
Should this page fill up too fast (with articles shorter than this one) we will go to a weekly instead of monthly page.
So, if you have followed the link as an experiment to see how this works, this is where directions on how to use the page would continue.
This article will be continued, revised and updated as needed. If you find some difficulty using the site, please contact the editor so the issue may be addressed or corrected.
This page should have opened in a new window, so by closing this window you should find yourself right back where you were before you clicked the link that brought you here.
Alternatively, you may click one of the tabs at the top, bottom or right hand side of the page to go back to the main page of your choice.
Also, this page is the one where you may find each individual article archived in the archive in the right hand column.
The search function on this page will search the individual article archive.
There will undoubtedly be changes to our format as we go along. For example, the Photos page may change to a gallery style instead of a list. Right now, the list seemed like the easiest for people to use, though that perception could change and we could end up with a gallery view that offers a link to a list view. Feel free to share your opinion about it.
Right now I have been the only person working on the page (with a little technical assistance now and then from Kita) so updating and other changes may be slower than one might wish, but I think with regular effort this should become a good and easy resource for the community.
To send a message to the editor or to share a news (or other) item, just click the tab at the top, bottom or right hand side of the page for the Republic News Facebook Group OR just click the name of the group just previous (in this sentence) as it (if everything works right) also should be a link.
It's just a little practice for those who require it. (I'm one of them)
So please be patient and enjoy the service as it develops.
Blessings,
Rev. Gregory "Doc" Lowrey
